The bible does a great job of explaining how to be a great wife and the roles that women and men should play when they are married. But the Bible says nothing about boyfriend or girlfriend relationships.

The only relationship that comes close to some dating was when Jacob fell in love with Rachel the first moment he saw her. The only thing she did to win his heart was walking with her Sheep, being about her father’s business. Jacob from the start knew she was a good woman. 14 years working for her father for her hand in marriage, literally a sister-wife, they were married.

Thank God that you don’t have to become someone else 2nd, but you will be their one and only. While I was in wait for my boyfriend (now my husband) to ask me to marry him, I wanted to show him not only with my words but through my actions what would make me a great wife. So I was a good girlfriend like Rachel waiting to become married.

So here are some ways to know that you are a good girlfriend while you are in wait to become a great wife.

She puts God first

What made me a good girlfriend was before I start dating my husband I shared my love of God with him. I wanted him to know what type of person I was and that I didn’t make a move if God didn’t say it was ok too. I even prayed about dating my husband, and I let him know that.

The good thing was that he was a man about God’s business as well, so we were able to go to church together which increased our relationship with each other. We’re able to put God first so that we could be what God wanted us to be.

She is a good listener

As a wife, it is very important for my husband to know that he is being heard. This skill set is done while I was dating him.  Sometimes a man just wants to know that he is being heard by the woman that loves him. As a good girlfriend, I wanted to know how my man’s day went. I wanted to know if something was wrong and so if needed I could offer advice to help.

She show respect

A man knows he has a good woman when she shows respect to God, herself, their families, friends and most importantly to her man. A good girlfriend doesn’t have to push the limits. She gives respect because she already has it in return. So put some respect on his name. This will take you very far when you’re married.

 “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God”1 Peter 2:17

She shares the same value

My relationship wasn’t forced because I came into the relationship sharing my standards, values and we agreed on how people should be treated. Our views on things like family, education and money put both of us in the same frame of mind.  As a good girlfriend, we established a clear understanding about the honesty of our relationship and where we both seen ourselves with eachothers.

 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,”Philippians 2:3

She is herself and lets her man be himself

As a good girlfriend, it was critical for us to let each other be ourselves. I came into the relationship with everything I was. I was a hard working college student living in the dorm at the age of 26 because I decide to go back to college out of state. I love God, my family and I had a vision of where I saw myself going.

Dating my husband I let him be him.  I didn’t force him to be who he wasn’t when he was with me, and I didn’t let myself be someone I wasn’t when I was with him. When we got married he told me, I was the only person that he felt could totally be himself around and that’s why he married me.

She open

Being a good girlfriend was I was open with my boyfriend. I let him know when I was upset and when I was on top of my game. I let him into my thought process and when I felt it was only to trust him I gave him my heart because he was open with me in return.

She loves

To be a good girlfriend was I able to love my man the way he deserved to be loved. I didn’t do it to get something from him. I did it because my heart was open to show and receive his love. Before I enter into a relationship with my husband I had time to build a loving relationship with God and let go of my old pains. My heart was open for love.

 “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”1 Corinthians 13:7

She someone you can take home

As a good girlfriend being a sweet person by nature, it was easy to get along with his family. I felt when you’re getting to know anyone that first impressions are what people look at. Especial men that may want to take you home to meet they, mommas. So be a person that can be introduced to anyone, especially family.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”Genesis 2:24

We all can have our opinion on what makes a good girlfriend. It’s my hopes to give you tips to help you value your wait in God to one day become somebody’s wife. If you feel you haven’t been doing some of these things on this list no worries. Just continue to build your relationship with God, and he will lead you in a relationship with your potential husband. The word of God says lean not to your understanding.
